World class quality and excellence are components of the corporate ethos that made Philsteel a trusted name for decades.
Philsteel Holdings Corporation is behind pioneering steel manufacturing companies — Steel Corporation of the Philippines, Philmetal Products, Inc., and Premier Shelter, Inc.— that deliver supremely global and proudly local brands including GALVALUME 55, COLORBOND and GALVABOND PURE ZINC.
In 1968, Uy Po, the Uy Family patriarch began building the family’s galvanizing steel business in Bohol, starting the roots that will later on become the Philsteel Group of companies.
Several decades after in December 1979, Philsteel was established when the company entered into a joint venture with then two of Australia’s leading industrial manufacturing names: John Lysaght Australia Ltd. (JLA) and Australia Mining and Smelting Company. The partnership gave birth to a company known as Philippine Steel Coating Corporation with the Uy family as major stockholders and corporate managers. Three months after incorporation, plant construction commenced on what was to become the Philippines’ first continuous galvanized and double-coated, double-baked pre-painted steel coil manufacturer. With the continuous galvanizing line, Philsteel’s pivotal role as a frontliner in the country’s struggle towards the development and modernization of the iron and steel industry was achieved.
In 1981, the Philsteel Group drew the blueprint of a new company which was envisioned to produce economical and durable building materials comparable to the world’s best. Out of this vision, a company called Philmetal Products, Inc. was established. Philmetal became fully operational in 1990, and is now engaged in roll-forming, slitting, shearing and fabrication of metal building products and systems such as roofing, cladding, floor decking, steel framing system and a host of steel sections and bended accessories that are integral parts of the building products.
In 2000, Philsteel launched PHILSTEEL VENTURES, INC., which later became PREMIER SHELTER PRODUCTS, INC., to support the Group’s sales in areas outside Philmetal’s scope, notably in the provinces outside NCR and Metro Cebu by establishing roll-forming operations in the provinces.
Beyond offering building products to various industries and construction segments, the Philsteel Group answered the government’s call for a private sector-led integration of the middle to downstream sector of the local steel industry, regarded as the linchpin of industrialization. Thus, in 1996, Philsteel established the STEEL CORPORATION OF THE PHILIPPINES as an earnest response to the IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY ACT.
Uy Pu, the Uy Family patriarch began building the family’s galvanizing steel business in Bohol, starting the roots that will later on become the Philsteel Group of companies.
In December 1979, Philsteel partnered with two of Australia’s leading industrial manufacturing names: John Lysaght Australia Ltd. (JLA) and Australia Mining and Smelting Company to launch a company called Philippine Steel Coating Corporation, which became a Trailblazer in the Galvanizing industry.
In 1981, Philsteel notched a milestone in the Philippine construction industry with the introduction of Galvabond, which offers world-class lock-forming quality, superior corrosion resistance, weldability and formability with excellent coating adhesion.
In 1990, Philmetal became fully operational in producing world-class building materials. The subsidiary is engaged in roll-forming, slitting, shearing and fabrication of metal building products and systems such as roofing: Spandek, Spandek Curve, Durawide, Spanlok, Flexi-crimp, Econocorr, Econocurve, Kliplok, Crimplok, Megadek, SuperV-Dek, Super V Crimp, Tiara Wavetile, Siena Ribtile, Rusko, Steeltile and Milano; cladding (EZ Clad, Versaclad and Panel Rib); floor decking (Steeldek I, II, III, IV); steel framing system and a host of steel sections and bended accessories that are integral part of a building. These products are actually well-known Australian brands developed using Australian technology, acquired from John Lysaght.
On August 8, 1991, President Corazon Aquino enacted Republic Act 7103, known as the IRON and STEEL ACT, a policy that aims to spur the development of the Philippine iron and steel industry; while serving as the springboard and basis for Philippine industrialization that can attract investor interest and ensure the growth.
Philsteel Holdings Corp. Chairman, Abeto A. Uy decided it was time to give shape to his long-cherished vision of helping the Filipino enjoy the world’s best steel products at the least possible cost and to assure that, these had to be manufactured locally. With the government asking the help of Philsteel to jumpstart the country’s industrialization through an integrated iron and steel industry, under the mandate of R.A. 7103 and guided by its Chairman’s vision of a more progressive Filipino, STEEL CORPORATION OF THE PHILIPPINES was born. Started in 1994, the Plant sprawls over 22 hectares of prime land, in the heart of Balayan, Batangas. Costing a total of US$ 170M initially to construct, the plant houses the most modern integrated flat steel products processing facilities and auxiliary equipment in the country and the ASEAN region.
In 1999, the Philsteel Group of companies pioneered the introduction of roofing technologies in the Philippines with Steel Corporation of the Philippines using patented, cutting edge technologies.
Philsteel became a trailblazer when it introduced GALVALUME® 55, the first locally produced 55% aluminum and zinc alloy coated steel sheet that provides superior roofing protection for Filipinos; and GALVABOND Pure Zinc, which improved galvanized iron by eliminating LEAD, which is a health hazard.
COLORBOND was among the first pre-painted metallic roofing coated steel roofing products in the Philippines. With the breakthrough success of Galvalume 55, Philsteel began using 100% genuine GALVALUME 55 as substrate for all Colorbond pre-painted roof profiles in 1999.
In 2000, Philsteel Ventures, Inc., which later became PREMIER SHELTER PRODUCTS INC. (2016), was established to produce world-class steel products and solutions committed to address the need for roofing, ceiling and decking installation requirements outside the National Capital region and Metro Cebu.
After four decades of growth and leadership, Philsteel continues to move the industry forward with the same unwavering belief that Filipino-made is world class quality.
